Jim Miner, Esq.
Jim provides legal advice and guidance to clients including individuals, startups, and large corporations. His practice focuses on counseling clients in various patent related areas including the preparation and prosecution of patent applications in a variety of technologies. Jim also counsels in various related areas including patent and patent portfolio assessments, strategic patent portfolio development and management, patentability opinion drafting, right-to-use / clearance opinion drafting, and diligence/transactional work. His technical background includes preparing patent applications in business method, data processing, and mechanical fields of endeavor.
Jim's background includes over seven years of experience as a Patent Examiner, examining US and PCT patent applications, at the US Patent and Trademark Office working in the mechanical arts. After working as an Examiner, Jim has now been in private practice for over eighteen years. He has prepared and prosecuted hundreds of patent applications and has practiced law with two of Virginia's largest firms, as well as with a large Northern Virginia intellectual property boutique law firm. As an attorney, Jim has counseled organizations in a variety of technologies including telecommunications, business methods, data processing, data transfer, automated processing, financial transaction processing, Internet based processing, image processing, consumer devices, medical devices, casting technologies, automotive drive systems and other electro-mechanical / mechanical technologies where a solid patent foundation is critical in attaining business objectives.
Jim graduated in 1989 with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY. He received his law degree in 1994 from American University (Washington College of Law), while working at the US Patent and Trademark Office as an Examiner. He is admitted to practice in Virginia and the District of Columbia, and is registered to practice before the US Patent and Trademark Office.
